We need to begin compiling a list of models, like our Regional Workbench Consortium (RWBC)and the Center for Urban and Regional Ecology (CURE), that can be characterized as civically-engaged, problem-driven "knowledge-action collaboratives." Said models should connect science-to-science and science-to-society at the city-region scale (with an understanding of how city-regions are embedded in global flows). Other criteria are relevant too (need to be specified).
Below are two examples
1. The Centre for Urban and Regional Ecology (CURE) was established within the Department of planning and Landscape, University of Manchester, in 1999. Research at the Centre focuses on the organisation and activity of complex communities, both natural and human. The multidisciplinary team is committed to providing and promoting high quality research in relation to the new academic agendas of regionalism, sustainability and the re-building of environmental capital. http://www.sed.manchester.ac.uk/research/cure/
2. Regional Workbench Consortium (RWBC). The RWBC is a collaborative network of university and community partners dedicated to enabling sustainable city-region development. RWBC partners promote multidisciplinary research and service learning aimed at understanding how problems of environment and development interrelate across local, regional and global scales. Taking a forward-looking perspective, the RWBC focuses on the Southern California-Northern Baja California transborder region - especially the San Diego-Tijuana city-region and coastal zone.
