BRP Background and RFA

SBRP proposal guidelines (from which the exerpts below were cut)
http://www-apps.niehs.nih.gov/sbrp/rfa/rfa_guidelines.html

Presently, the SBRP Program funds 19 university-based grants, for a total of 234 research projects and support cores (http://www-apps.niehs.nih.gov/sbrp/index.cfm). The SBRP was established to complement the activities undertaken by the USEPA and the ATSDR:

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences | Superfund Basic Research Program
A LEGACY IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH: Charting a Course for Advancing Basic Research to Practice
VOLUME 1: SBRP Technology Transfer and Information Transfer Tools (pdf file)

Additional research topics and approaches of interest to the SBRP:

EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD)
ORD is the scientific research arm of EPA. ORD's leading-edge research helps provide the solid underpinning of science and technology for the Agency. ORD conducts research on ways to prevent pollution, protect human health, and reduce risk. The work at ORD laboratories, research centers, and offices across the country helps improve the quality of air, water, soil, and the way we use resources. Applied science at ORD builds our understanding of how to protect and enhance the relationship between humans and the ecosystems of Earth. A downloadable version of "Innovations in Research at EPA" (1.7MB PDF) is available at http://www.epa.gov/ord/htm/ORDoutreach.pdf

ORD Mission
Perform research and development to identify, understand, and solve current and future environmental problems. Provide responsive technical support to EPA's mission. Integrate the work of ORD's scientific partners (other agencies, nations, private sector organizations, and academia). Provide leadership in addressing emerging environmental issues and in advancing the science and technology of risk assessment and risk management. As part of our mission, ORD has identified eight research areas considered as highest priority. They are:

Air
Drinking Water
Ecosystem Assessment and Restoration
Global Change
Human Health Protection
Water Quality
Pollution Prevention and New Technologies
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)

ATSDR

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/

CERCLA Priority List of Hazardous Substances (2003)

Ecotox GIS! http://www.legacy.ca.gov/new_atlas.epl
Part of the California Digital Conservation Atlas, a Joint Effort of OEHHA and the California Legacy Project. Ecotox GIS is a new product of the Ecotoxicology Unit, whose goal is to develop scientific and technical resources and tools for ecological risk assessment

The Ecotoxicology Unit was formed within the Cal/EPA Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) in response to increasing needs in California for the specific assessment of ecological risks posed by chemicals. Current activities in the Ecotoxicology Unit support development of general ecological risk assessment guidelines and technical resources for Cal/EPA.
