Background and supporting documentation
1. Please look over Version 3.1 of the RWBC Vision and Requirement
Document, click here (word
doc).
Jason is working on this and will post version 3.2 prior to the
meeting on Monday. Please read this document and come prepared with
comments.
2. We need to define the back end database structure for the RWBC.
Some ideas for the content (ontologies) are posted at: <http://www.regionalworkbench.org/html/ref_form.htm>.
From a more technical perspective, Cindy will lead a discussion
on the following questions:
• Who is the user?
• Are there different types of users? (ie. Researchers,
students, general public, etc…)
• Do we cater to all types of users?
• What kind of data is going to reside on the RWBC Database?
o RWBC project/narrative information
o RWBC affiliate information (contacts)
o RWBC Communication center data (calendar, messageboard)
o RWBC related files (including GIS data, text, …finish
defining)
o References to other information (websites, articles, papers,
…finish defining)
• How are we going to populate this data? Identify specifics
for each category of data.
o Files: who can upload files?
o References: who will populate
• What useful information can we extract by relating data?
• What kind of links need to exist across data types?
• With all of the requirements that we are defining, what
are the technical requirements?
• Is our server going to work for all of this functionality?
First Steps:
Come up with Use Cases for usage.
Define database table structure.
Security – Let’s formally define security levels.
Prioritize – what is most important to finish. Can we divide
into phases?
Check out this link to see a rough cut of the search utility:
http://www.regionalworkbench.org/html/DB/addCategory.php
Cindy's note: The search utility works for keyword, subcategory,
and a combination of the two. The Type search does not work yet.
Just check it out. You might have trouble figuring out how it works
since I have not added any usability features. Just let me know
if you have any questions.
3. . We need to select our flagship projects for the May 29-30,
2003 RWBC Roll Out. For instance, one clear deliverable will be
the solid 3D model <http://www.regionalworkbench.org/html/3dmodels.htm>
, an exemplar illustrating the integration of GIS and 3D Vis. There
is no shortage of possibilities, indeed there are too many. We need
to settle on a plan. Top brass from the NIEHS will be attending
and many others. We need to have our act together (innovative demos
that are research-driven, collaborative, and community-based in
a way that links science and technology to policy and planning).
4. If the RWBC is to succeed, it needs to generate funds of its
own. I have been passing around info about funding possibilities.
We need to mobilize a strategy along these lines. One possibility:
