Doing Critical Research for Sustainable City-Regions
A bibliographic guide to philosophy, theory, discourses, ethics, skills and collaborative praxis

Draft Compiled by Keith Pezzoli, *last updated October 6, 2003
A Work in Progress/ Suggestions welcome: kpezzoli@ucsd.edu

NOTE: Clearly a guide of this scope cannot adhere to a tighthly ordered ideological framework or litmus test of preordained sustainability criteria. Rather the intent here is to offer a board contour map of substantive theory, along side literature delving into philosophical, ethical and technical aspects of the sustainable development challenge. The guide is designed to help students locate useful work as they embark on an original research project of their own. Not all of the publications listed here address sustainability, or city-regions, in a direct fashion. Some of it, for instance, has a strictly methodological focus. The intent is to provide a kind of "ecology of knowledge" by virtue of bringing together fragmented niches of work under one roof (or should I say "table"--of contents). The guide is part of a more complete research handbook I've created for students in UC San Diego's Urban Studies and Planning Program, click here for access.

E-Reserve listings: Matthew Ferguson (Course Reserves Coordinator, UCSD SSHL Library) has begun to post many of the E-reserve listings on this guide on the library's web site. To access the E-Reserves system, click here. (NOTE: The Electronic Reserves server (reserves.ucsd.edu) is restricted to UCSD IP addresses. This means that it can only be accessed from computers on the UCSD network, including dial-in accounts provided by ACS Office of Network Operations. For those using this guide without the benefit of a UCSD IP address, one can access the E-reserve references through other channels (e.g., journal databases, science direct, hard copy sources in the library). To view a pdf file of the contents of the e-reserves, click here.
