Project Abstract:
Spatial distribution of natural and man made features respond to the sinuosity of the terrain relief and to the relative height or depth from sea level. Proximity to the coastline is also an influential factor. A digital elevation model for the Southern California-Northern Baja California is pursued as a 3D canvas to be draped with different themes for a better understanding the transborder region of the Californias.

Project Goals:
Integrate a digital elevation model of land and sea floor for the Southern California-Northern Baja California region merging data from US and Mexico sources, that include San Diego County, Colorado River Delta, Imperial Valley, Salton Sea, down to Ensenada, Baja California. The continental shelf and slope to the Pacific Ocean basin should be included. Best available data for the regional scope will be procured. Construct a solid terrain model of the regional canvas.

Assessment of Reaching Goals:
Accurate draping of spatial data from off the shelf data providers should match within half a cell the spatial resolution of the model. Visualization tools using the 3D regional Canvas, like virtual fly thru, should provide a comprehensive perspective of the region for the decision makers and to the general public.

Full Description of Project:
3D Regional Canvas of the Californias, is a digital elevation model of Southern California- Northern Baja California region, including land and sea floor terrain features, a unique dataset assembled with the best available regional elevation data, shared by active members of the Consortium from institutions of both sides of the border, with a common interest of linking science and policy for a better regional planning. The geographic extent includes the mountain range from North San Diego to south of Ensenada, from the 6,000 feet deep Pacific Ocean basin to the desert of Arizona-California border with the magnificence of the Salton Sea and Colorado River delta.The US elevation data came from the Space Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)a NASA project that use the same technology to map Mars and Venus many yeas ago.

Data sources
• US geological survey (USGS) elevation models from the SRTM NASA project: 1 second arc elevation grids.
• INEGI Mexican mapping agency, Mexico's 3 second arc digital elevation models (DEMs)
• SCRIPPS Institution Oceanography (SIO), US sea floor data, Geologic data center.
• CICESE research Center from Ensenada, Baja California, provided the Mexican seafloor data.

Center of U.S. Mexican Studies booth at the "IV Encuentro sobre el Medio Ambiente Fronterizo" held in Tijuana. Presentation of the Solid Terrain Model a 4x5 feet physical model of the 3D regional Canvas, a physical terrain relief model cut from a single block of foam by a computer-driven milling machine, and then painted by a unique 3D inkjet plotter with a natural color Landsat image mosaic. The model combines data from the Space Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, CICESE digital elevation data for Mexico and Scripps Institution of Oceanography seafloor data. It is a product of the Regional Workbench Consortium, a collaborative effort by university and community-based partners in the US and Mexico, and will be used to focus discussion of urban planning, watershed ecology and the flow of toxic contaminants on land and in the sea in the border area.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Geological Data Center

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), SDSC, and the UCSD Libraries are collaborating to create a modern Oceanography Digital Library that will enable inquiry-driven learning for both scientists and "K through gray" users.
